2. Bali Travel Guide: Things to Know Before You Go to Bali
Bali is an island province in the Greater Sunda Islands in Indonesia. The only airport here is Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar, which is well-connected to major cities worldwide. There are direct flights available from major airports of countries like Australia, Singapore, Japan, India, Malaysia and of course Indonesia Mainland. If you plan to travel from USA or European countries, you must book a connecting flight from any of the countries.
Booking a cheap flight is sometimes essential to make a budget trip here. And for this keep checking booking sites occasionally like skyscanner.com for occasional sales on ticket prices. Try to book flights at least six week earlier to get a good deal.
Visa on Arrival (VOA)/ E-Visa:
Bali is a tourist friendly island, and so most travelers can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) for Bali. This 30 days VOA costs IDR 500,000 and can be extended once for another 30 days. You can pay the Visa fees at the airport counter, and then proceed to the immigration counter with the payment receipt. The officer will stick a sticker Visa on your passport. To avoid long queues at the Visa fees payment counter you may pay the Visa fees online before your arrival. If you pay the fees online you will get E-Visa in your e-mail. In the immigration counter show the .pdf you have received and the officer will attach the sticker Visa on your passport.
E-Visa application link: https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/
On Arrival:
There is only one airport in Bali which is Densapar International Airport or DPS. You will arrive here. After completing the immigration process get out from the airport and proceed to your first destination according to your 10 days Bali itinerary. For airport pick up, you may book a cab from Grab/Gojek app, which are similar to Uber. There is a separate Grab Lounge available at the left side of the airport exit for waiting till the cab arrives. Or you may hire a private taxi from the many drivers standing with name-boards at the arrival exit gate. Be cautious to bargain to get a good deal.
Getting Around in Bali:
Bali is truly a tropical paradise. But if you’re visiting for the first time, getting around can feel a bit daunting. Unlike many places, the island doesn’t have a public transportation system like buses or trains that tourists usually rely on. Instead, most travelers stick to a few popular options to navigate the island. Here are the four best ways to explore Bali. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages depending on how you like to travel.
a. Renting a Scooter
For those adventurous solo travelers or couples, renting a scooter is the go-to choice. Scooters are everywhere in Bali, and finding a rental is very easy like buying a candy from the mart. Sometimes you can book directly from the hotel. Google map is accessible very smoothly with 4G or 5G internet. Plus, it’s one of the most affordable ways to get around, with daily rentals starting at about IDR 70,000 (around $5 USD). The petrol costs as low as IDR 10,000 per liter.
Getting around in Bali in scooter is the best way to cover the 10 days Bali itinerary. Bali’s traffic can be a bit wild, especially in busy spots like Kuta or Seminyak. you’ll need a valid international driving permit to ride legally. Plus you must have valid travel insurance with you. If you’re comfortable on two wheels and want the freedom to explore at your own pace, this is a fantastic option. But if navigating tight roads or heavy traffic makes you uneasy, you might want to look at other alternatives.
b. Hiring a Taxi on the Spot
You can find traditional taxis in popular areas, especially near airports, hotels, and tourist hotspots. Just wave one down or look for them parked on busy streets. Always agree on a fare before hopping in, or ask them to use the meter if possible (Blue Bird taxis are known for being reliable and metered).
While this method is super convenient, it might not always be the most budget-friendly choice, and some drivers may try to charge you more, especially in touristy spots. Still, it’s a handy option for quick trips or when you’re in a rush.
c. Using Ride-Hailing Apps (Grab or Gojek)
Grab and Gojek are like the Uber of Southeast Asia, and they’re a game-changer in Bali. You can easily book a scooter or car ride right from your phone, see the fare upfront, and even order food, massages, or packages through the same app.
d. Hiring a Private Car – Great for Day Trips
If you are planning to explore areas like Uluwatu, Ubud, or the waterfalls in the north or plan for a whole day trip, hiring a private car with a driver is a comfortable and flexible option for you. This will cover all the places mentioned in the 10 days Bali itinerary. Rates typically start from IDR 600,000 to 800,000 (around $40–55 USD) for 8–10 hours, depending on the distance and itinerary.
Drivers are usually very knowledgeable and can even suggest local spots or places to eat. I have seen they are excellent mobile photographers also. This is an excellent option if you’re traveling with family or in a group and want to maximize your day without the stress of navigation.
3. When to Visit Bali:
Bali is located in the tropical region and thus observes summer throughout the year. It has manly 2 seasons- one dry summer and the other the wet summer.
Dry Season (April to September)
The dry season is the most popular time to visit Bali. In this time the weather remains fine with sunny days, low humidity, and minimal rainfall. Temperatures typically range between 27–32°C (80–90°F), and humidity levels are lower compared to the wet season. This period is perfect for enjoying Bali’s beaches, water sports, visiting temples and all outdoor adventures like hiking Mount Batur or exploring the rice terraces of Ubud. The sea remains calm and clear, making it ideal for diving and snorkeling. June, July and August are the peak tourist months, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. For a more peaceful experience with great weather and fewer tourists, May and September are considered the best months to travel.
Wet Season (October to March)
The wet season in Bali is also attractive which brings high humidity and frequent tropical showers, often in the form of heavy downpours. Temperatures remain warm, averaging 26–30°C (79–86°F).The rain usually occur in the afternoon or evening. While outdoor activities can be limited due to rain, the island becomes visually stunning with lush and green everywhere, creating a beautiful, serene atmosphere. This season is ideal for travelers looking to avoid crowds and take advantage of lower accommodation and tour prices. It’s also a good time to enjoy Bali’s indoor attractions, cultural experiences, and spa retreats.
4. Helpful Information Before Going to Bali:
What to Pack:
When you visit a new country, it’s easy to find yourself tempted to ‘accidentally’ overpack! But carrying minimal which is needed is sometimes essential when moving from one place to other to cover your 10 days Bali itinerary. However, figuring out what to bring for Bali is actually quite straightforward. Here are a few quick tips.
Bali is a summer country. So pack cotton or linen based light weight dresses. Pack those dresses which you feel comfortable wearing in, be it in the beaches or in the restaurants. Additionally, think about including a few items that cover your skin, as you’ll need to dress modestly when visiting religious sites and temples.
Laundry services in Bali are very affordable and typically take around 24 hours, so consider bringing only half of what you initially intended and plan to do laundry midway through your stay.
Drinking Water in Bali:
Tap water in Bali is not safe to drink, so always opt for bottled or filtered water. You can buy bottled water at cheap price from any mart available at all the places. Try to buy big bottles like 1.5 liter bottle. Many hotels and cafes provide free refills to reduce plastic waste, so consider bringing a reusable water bottle.
Bali Culture and Customs you need to know:
Bali is an island of traditional culture and spiritual bliss. Its important to be respectful to their culture and customs. When you visit any temple, wear a sarong and modest clothing, and avoid pointing your feet at religious objects. Daily canang sari ( Balinese offerings) are placed on the ground, so be mindful not to step on them. A friendly “Terima kasih” (thank you) goes a long way when interacting with locals.
